It was not until 1770 that houses in Prague were given numbers. Before, houses were identified and located by an attractive, but utterly confusing system of allegorical symbols. Here are some, which are still present in the older part of the city, mostly in Nerudova street in Mala Strana district. Most of the symbolism was carefully chosen with important alchemical meaning behind it, now however, the original significance is generally lost.
